The brush roll (also called a beater bar) is the spinning cylinder with bristles at the base of your upright vacuum. It's responsible for agitating carpet fibers to dislodge embedded dirt. Here's how to keep it working.

Monthly Cleaning

Turn off and unplug your vacuum. Remove the brush roll cover and lift out the brush roll. Use scissors to cut through tangled hair, thread, and carpet fibers wrapped around the bristles. Pull the debris free and wipe the brush roll clean.

When to Replace

  • Bristles are worn down to less than 1/4 inch
  • Bristles are permanently bent or melted
  • The brush roll wobbles or doesn't spin smoothly
  • End caps are cracked or bearings are noisy

Choosing a Replacement

Match your vacuum's model number to the compatible brush roll listing. Universal brush rolls exist but may not fit perfectly — model-specific replacements are always preferred. Look for brush rolls with stiff nylon bristles, not soft synthetic fibers, for best carpet cleaning performance.

Belt Inspection

While you have the brush roll out, inspect the belt. If it's cracked, stretched, or glazed (shiny on the inside), replace it at the same time. A worn belt reduces brush roll speed and cleaning effectiveness.
